Cruachan is the traditional capital of the Connachta, the prehistoric and early historic rulers of the western region or province of Ireland - Connacht.
In English it's Rathcroghan, in Irish it's Ráth Cruachan, meaning 'fort of Cruachan', location of the beginning and end of our epic Irish saga, an Táin Bó Cúailnge, 'the Cattle Raid of Cooley'. Here we see a stylised representation of the two great bulls at Cruachan - Fionnbheannach of Connacht, and the Donn Cuailnge of Ulster.
This is the royal seat of Medb (Maeve), Ireland's Warrior Queen, and hosts one of the main entrances to the Irish Otherworld, the Síd ar Cruachan we know as Uaimh na gCat, the Cave of the Cats. This has been described in the medieval period as "Ireland's Gate to Hell", as well as being the "fit abode" of the Morrigan, Irish Tuatha Dé Danann Goddess of Battle, Magic and Prophecy.
